Women to implement agriculture projects

Aim of the "Lak Kantha Saviya" project is to encourage farmer – women to organize themselves and involve in production, marketing and micro agriculture entrepreneurship which lead to the increase of family nutrition, modification of the kitchen and the involvement in home gardening. Under this program being implemented in 14 districts, 388 farmer women groups have been formed. After identifying suitable agricultural projects, priority will be given for their implementation.

In year 2007 the agriculture sector performed successfully as a key economic sector making significant contribution to national income, food security and employment. Agriculture being the livelihood of the majority of the rural sector, the agriculture development programs performed as a foundation in the reduction of rural poverty. The role of the Ministry of Agriculture Development and Agrarian Service was accomplished through the generation and dissemination of technology and through the implementation of policies, regulations and institutional structures, the annual report of the Ministry states.

Under the "Gama Naguma" program 236 villages have been selected for establishing industries including agro based industries. Provisions have been made available to establish a revolving fund and purchase necessary inputs. Provision of Rs Two million has been provided for Farmer Relief Service (Govi Sevaya). This is a novel program of obtaining information and instant problems being solved over the phone free of charge.

Increasing the productivity of certain field crops envisage the development of the cultivation of Maize, Kurakkan, Soybean, Green gram and big onion. Action will be taken to establish revolving funds to make financial transactions easier for 150 agro production organizations to be set up for this purpose. Under this project 50% subsidy is given for obtaining the required technical assistance and supporting the value addition process at rural level to improve the store facilities 50 medium scale (10 Tons capacity). Big onion stores are under construction in Matale district.
