Docs in North, East strike today
Members of the Government Medical Officers’
Association, serving in hospitals in the North and East, will
launch a token strike today in protest against the Health
Ministry’s delay in finalising their annual transfer list. Doctors in Trincomalee, Ampara, Batticoloa and
Weli-Oya will be participating in the token strike. The GMOA has
also made representation to the government to entrust the
responsibility of the administration of doctors in the North and
East to the Essential Services Commissioner General as the GMOA
had no faith in the Health Ministry, the GMOA said.

Violating the Constitution
President Jayewardene fathered the 1978
Constitution. He saw to it that, as President, he would be
endowed with all powers other than to carry out sex changes,
i.e. "to turn a man into a woman or vice versa", as
he himself put it. Towards this objective, he had
Article 35 (l) of the Constitution worded as follows
by a bunch of sycophantic constitutional lawyers
without a protest from even one of his gutless party
members: "While any person holds office as President,
no proceedings shall be instituted or continued
against him in any court or tribunal in respect of
anything done or omitted to be done by him either in
his official or private capacity". These lawyers and
party members, cringing before President Jayewardene,
failed to add a few vital words to protect the
sovereignty of the People, namely, to the effect that
any unconstitutional or unlawful acts of the President
could be challenged and set aside, when justified,
without his having to appear personally in the Courts.

Micro insurance,
advertising meet regulator’s attention
The amendments to the Regulation of Insurance
Industry Act No.43 of 2000 are expected to give a boost to the
micro insurance industry of the country with the implementation
of Bank Assurance. This will give banks direct involvement in
selling insurance as institutional insurance agents and bank
staff selling the covers will have to meet certain criteria that
the Insurance Board of Sri Lanka (IBSL) will spell out.
