Forces retake Illanthiven

The Army yesterday had continued its advance in the Mannar theatre and captured an area called Illanthiven on the Mannar –Puliyankulam road around 4. 30 p.m., Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

He said Troops had destroyed eight Tiger bunkers and T-55 battle tanks had been deployed in the operation. According to LTTE radio messages intercepted by the Army, 10 LTTE cadres had been killed and 40 injured, he said. Three soldiers had been killed and 12 injured in the confrontation.

Illanthiven is two km North-West of Parappakandal, which the troops captured a few days ago.

Meanwhile, in the Northern Peninsula, one soldier was killed and another injured due to artillery fire by the Tigers, in Nagarkovil. The LTTE had been firing from their artillery gun positions in Pallai, the Military Spokesman said.

In Ummarikulam in Sangamankanda in the Ampara District, the Special Task Force killed two LTTE cadres. Their bodies were recovered along with a radio set, two T-56 assault rifles, one claymore mine, a GPS system and a remote control.
