Jobs for a lakh more in Qatar

by Lakshmi de Silva

The State of Qatar has agreed to employ another 100,000 Sri Lankans in addition to the 130,000 already there. This follows an agreement reached during the talks between Qatar’s Minister of Labour Dr. Sultan Al Dawsary and Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Employment and Welfare Development Keheliya Rambukwella in Qatar, the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment announced yesterday (10).

The employment opportunities were for skilled workers in the construction field and artisans. Last year 38,000 migrated to Qatar and out of that 34,000 were trained and skilled male workers. The rest 4,000 were housemaids, the SLBFE said.
