Mount Lavinia Hotel ISO 22000 certified

Chairman SLSI, Dr A R L Wijesekera congratulated the staff of Mount Lavinia Hotel from top management downwards for having obtained ISO 22000 Food Safety Management Certification from SLSI.

He further stated that in fact, the Mount Lavinia Hotel has been the first Hotel to obtain HACCP Food Safety Certification, way back in 2004. Additionally, this Hotel occupies a historic building which had its origin in 1806 as Governor Thomas Maitland’s residence and was featured in 1956 by International film Director David Lean in the Star studded film ‘Bridge on the River Kwai’. Mount Lavinia Hotel received official Hotel status in 1877 as the Grand Hotel, and today is the proud recipient of the most modern ‘state of the art’ Food Safety Management System i.e. ISO 22000.

The ISO 22000 standard published in 2005 he stated, is an international auditable standard defining Food Safety along the entire food chain in order to ensure that there are no weak links. In a nutshell, the standard can be applied to organizations ranging from feed producers and other food manufacturers and related organizations such as producers of equipment packaging material etc. ensuring food safety along the line. The essence of the ISO 22000 was to have a HACCP type standard with a basis of the ISO 9001 : 2000 Quality Management standard. In short the ISO 22000 standard provides a food safety management system that incorporates all the generally recognized key elements to ensure food safety along the entire food chain, up to point of consumption. In European terminology, this would be referred to as the ‘Farm to Fork ‘ policy. It is indeed the ‘new kid on the block’.

Having received ISO 22000 certification, it can now be stated without any reservation that Mount Lavinia Hotel has tangibly demonstrated its capability of providing consumers with safe products at all times.
