An investigation has been launched into the conduct of a Commissioner of the Welikada Prisons, alleged to have been involved in providing ‘comfort’ to key suspects of grievous crimes like the murder of the High Court Judge Sarath Ambepitiya, Commissioner General of Prisons Vajira Abeygunawardena told The Island yesterday (25).The suspect Commissioner of Prisons is alleged to have provided special privileges to some suspects detained at the Welikada Prison, including Potta Naufer the principal suspect in that case. No import of rice despite harvest loss
Despite the recent damage caused by the heavy rains to the Maha Season rice crop in several districts, the government has no intention of importing rice to meet the demand during the forthcoming Sinhala and Hindu New Year.

Tusker on the rampage in Anuradhapura
A wild tusker that entered the Anuradhapura town around 8 p.m. on Monday created havoc attacking everything in its path and causing panic among the townfolk forcing them to run helter skelter for safety.
