An investigation has been launched into the conduct of a Commissioner of the Welikada Prisons, alleged to have been involved in providing ‘comfort’ to key suspects of grievous crimes like the murder of the High Court Judge Sarath Ambepitiya, Commissioner General of Prisons Vajira Abeygunawardena told The Island yesterday (25).
The suspect Commissioner of Prisons is alleged to have provided special privileges to some suspects detained at the Welikada Prison, including Potta Naufer the principal suspect in that case. The Commissioner was transferred after the CID and the Ministry of Justice initiated inquiries into his conduct, so that the witnesses would not be interfered with, the Commissioner General said.
The Commissioner who is suspected of having links with some criminal elements was also said to have obtained an exercising machine from the members of the family of a remand prisoner for services rendered by him to the prisoner at the Welikada Prison.
He is also alleged to have sold a large water tank of the prison after getting it dismantled and engaged himself in a number of corrupt and unlawful activities during his term of office as one of the four Commissioners of Prisons at the Welikada prison, sources said.
