


Controversy surrounds the move to hold the May Day in
Ampara to promote the UPFA-TMVP alliance contesting the first ever
elections to the Eastern Provincial Council scheduled for May 10.The decision taken in Parliament against the backdrop of
last Sunday’s assassination of Chief Government Whip Jeyaraj Fernandopulle
has shocked the security establishment.
Burmese rice at the end of
April at Rs. 50-55/kilo
President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government, struggling to
stabilize volatile rice prices, has finalized an agreement with the
Burmese military rulers to import 50,000 m.t. of rice to meet the growing
shortfall in the local market.
But the stocks will not arrive in Colombo until end of
this month due to the difficulty in finding sea transport.
