Sri Lanka selector Jayantha Seneviratne believes
young spinner Ajantha Mendis needs to join a big club - possibly abroad
- if he is to develop into a world-class player.
Mendis burst onto the one-day international scene with three for 39 on
Thursday as the tourists opened their three-match series in the
Caribbean with a one-wicket defeat to West Indies in Port of Spain.
The 23-year-old currently plays for Sri Lanka Army but former
international batsman Seneviratne reckons Mendis needs to focus fully on
cricket in order to fulfil his potential.
“He is something special and we must treat him that way,” said
Seneviratne.
“He cannot develop in to a world-class cricketer being in the Sri Lanka
Army as his work is also important.
“We hope the President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapakse, will get him
released to play for a good club. Also a stint abroad under famous
coaches could do Mendis’ game a world of good.”
