JVP parliamentarian Jayantha Wijesekara and two others, who allegedly were involved in the robbery of three vehicles of dissident JVP MPs, were yesterday further remanded by Colombo Additional Magistrate Giyan Ranawaka till April 21. They are to be produced for an Identification parade on or before that day.
Police recovered the two robbed vehicles from the JVP head office premises. Another vehicle was found in Chilaw. The vehicles of Piyasiri Wijenayake and Achala Jagoda were stolen on April 9 from the Parliament garage and the vehicle belonging to Samansiri Herath was forcibly taken away by an unidentified group from his home at Arachchikattuwa, Chilaw the same night.
Welikada police arrested Jayantha Wijesekara, MP, over the robbery of the vehicles and he was remanded till yesterday when he was produced before the Magistrate’s Court of Colombo earlier. Two other suspects had surrendered to the police and were produced before the Court yesterday together with Wijesekera. The two persons who had surrendered to the police were said to be two drivers working for the JVP.
The Welikada police requested the Magistrate to remand the suspects further, as investigations were incomplete.
Counsel Ranjith Caldera appearing for Jayantha Wijesekara requested the Court to enlarge the MP on bail, making a pledge that the MP would appear at the Identification parade. Police objected to the request. The Magistrate accordingly remanded them till April 21. The Magistrate delivered his order stating that he would consider granting bail, after the identification parade.
