Controversial sprinter Jani Chathurangani has been banned for two years, for using banned performance enhancing drugs at the South Asian Games held in Sri Lanka in 2006.
The SA Games gold medalist was banned by the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), in Geneva on April 14, for her alleged use of Nandralone, a banned steroid, at the South Asian Games held in Sri Lanka in 2006, the Athletic Association confirmed Friday.
The athletic association official said that the 26-year-old sprinter will also be stripped off all the medals she won since August 26, 2006.
Jani Chathurangani and three other athletes tested positive for performance enhancing drugs during the South Asian Games held in Sri Lanka. But Chathurangani, who rejected the charges was thrown a life line, when the SAG disciplinary committee headed by Wijedasa Rakapakse cleared her of all charges, last year.
However, the anti doping arm of the IAAF challenged the regional committee’s decision last year.
Chathurangani, who took part in several international and local meets after that, will be stripped of the medals she won after the SA Games in 2006, including the medals she won at the recently concluded South Asian Athletic Championship, in India.
Chathurangani won a silver and a gold medal in the 100 and 4x100 meters relays respectively, at the 2006 South Asian Games.
