Racing driver Dilshan Bandaranayake was killed due to a
mishap at the annual Nuwara Eliya Road Race meet yesterday afternoon.
Dilshan was injured when his car collided with another
racing driver Ajith Hemachandra’s Austin Mini while negotiating a bend
approaching the Nanu Oya road. He was rushed to the Nuwara Eliya District
Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at the Intensive Care Unit,
hospital sources said.
Two other competitors K.D. Ajith Hemachandra and Samitha Gunawardena
and popular motor cycle rider Kolitha Ishara Peiris were injured in
separate accidents.They, too, had been admitted to the same hospital and
Ajith Hemachandra was later transferred to the Colombo hospital, Head of
the Nuwara Eliya District Hospital. Dr Mahendra Adhikari told The
Island. Further investigations were in progress under the supervision
of Nuwara Eliya SSP Gamini Maturata.
