      Editorial:Govt. deserves the IIGEP knuckle sandwich
Fierce fighting broke out, between Government troops and the LTTE at Muhamalai, south of Jaffna, yesterday resulting in the Army gaining 500 meters of enemy territory. Defence spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told The Island that 52 LTTE cadres were killed and over 100 injured in the battle that was sparked off when the Tigers attempted to overrun the Military front lines in the area.
He said 15 soldiers died and 74 were injured, in the attack launched by the LTTE at 5.30 a.m. Troops used small arms, mortars and tank fire to repulse the attack.

Despite claims by the Ministers and senior government officials that there was no shortage of rice, the wholesale traders in Colombo put up their shutters yesterday (23) afternoon claiming they had no rice stocks to sell. Picture shows two shops, one empty and another closed, with the porters sitting on their carts as they had no work. Retail businessmen who went to the Fourth Cross Street had to go back empty handed.
