Bad weather spoils Moratuwa one-dayer

The annual Limited-Overs Big Match between Prince of Wales College and St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa, ended without a decision as bad weather caused the match to be abandoned, after the latter was reduced to 143 all out, at De Soysa Stadium yesterday.

Sent in to bat first, the Sebastianites’ big guns failed to fire as Cambrian bowlers, led by spinner Shivantha Kumara, troubled them consistently. Spinner Kumara mesmerised their opponents on Saturday during their two-day Big Match and continued with his fine form on the newly laid pitch yesterday too, striking with three wickets, while restricting Sebastianites to their lowly total of 143.

The highest score for St. Sebastian’s was 38 made by Sanjaya Fernando. While Rajitha Mendis and Janitha Jayawardena chipped in with 23 and 20 runs, none other could top 20 for them.

Having restricted their opponents to their low total, Cambrians couldn’t yet get their turn to bat as skies opened for the third consecutive day frustrating the Moratu Big Match fans. The two-day Big Match of the two schools, which ended in a draw on Saturday, was also hampered by rain and bad light on both days.

Out of the 23 years of Limited-Overs rivalry between the two Moratuwa schools, yesterday’s encounter goes down to record books as the second time where the match ended without a decision. St. Sebastian’s lead the L/O tally 11-10.

St. Sebastian’s College 143 all out in 48.3 overs (Sanjaya Fernando 38, Rajitha Mendis 23, Janitha Jayawardena 20; Shivantha Kumara 3/34).
