

The main projects of the PDB include restoration of Palmyrah plantations, conducting handicraft training programmes, renovation and enhancement of existing model farms, and production of various Palmyrah items. Promotion of Palmyrah products, conducting research related to food products and other product development and operating outlets called "Katpaham". These projects are implemented under Gama Neguma, Research and Development, Planting, Establishing Palmyrah arrack distilling and bottling plant in the Mannar district and Sales programmes. The ministry of Nations Buildings and Estate Infrastructure Development and several NGOs has provided financial assistance of Rs. 788,200 and Rs. 1.8 million respectively. In the year 2007, 27 programmes had been completed and 46 new programmes initiated.
Research programmes are related to food and other handicraft product development. Currently a research project is underway with the University of Sri Jayewardenepura to produce tooth paste powder and pulp and similarly a joint research project with Coconut Research Institute to develop new Palmyrah varieties is in progress. The PDB produces various items of edible and non-edible Palmyrah products such as dried raw Palmyrah tuber flour, boiled and dried tuber flour, Jaggery, Trickle, Sugar candy, processed sweet toddy, fruit pulp, Palmyrah jam, oil cake, fiber and broom stick the report noted.
So far the Palmyrah industry was dependent on the natural multiplication of Palmyrah groves that occur during rainy season. To expand the plantations into new areas, a pilot planting programme has been initiated under the directions of the Ministry. A sum of Rs. 475,625 had been allocated to the PDB for collection and planting 100,000 seeds in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts. Already Rs. 275,625 had been released to collect seeds from Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee districts. The Ministry had also directed to raise adequate nursery plants to embark on a large scale expansion programme, sated the repot.
The sales outlets had been established not only to sell Palmyrah based products but also to purchase products from Palmyrah producers. Palmyrah products range is based on tubers, trunk, leaves, fruit and fruit sap. These constitute a variety of handicraft and edible items such as Jaggery. The objective of "Katpaham" sales outlets is to popularize Palmyrah products and increase the incomes of Palmyrah dependent families. The network of "Katpaham" sales centers are spread over the island as Colombo, Mannar, Malisanthi, Nallur, Jaffna Town showroom, Chunnakam, Vavuniya, Batticaloa, Trincomalee. In an endeavor to increase the turnover, mobile sales commenced in 2006 with greater emphasis being placed in participating in exhibitions, while running mobile sales centers at government organizations to develop customer loyalty among government workers.
In 2007, 780 individuals had been trained as Palmyrah handicraft producers. Out of them about 80% will be engaged in self employment projects. In 2008, it is planned to conduct 106 training programmes to train 2120 individuals’ island wide.
