Seneviratne accuses Hakeem of betraying Muslims

SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem had betrayed the national identity of the Muslim community to the LTTE by signing an MoU with it during the last UNP regime and as a result the Muslim community in the East had suffered untold hardships, Power and Energy Minister and UPFA Elections co-ordinator for the Tricomalee district W. D. J Seneviratne said at a Provincial Council election rally in Kantale recently.

He said the Muslim community in the East now live without fear as the government was ensuring that everything that can be done was being done for their sake.

He said that several UNP stalwarts had joined the UPFA to support the Provincial Council election campaign as they were thoroughly disappointed over political upheaval experienced due to the UNP policies.

For nearly 20 years no government was able to hold the Provincial Council polls in the East. The Mavil Aru anicut had been closed and the LTTE had launched inhuman attacks on civilians but when the government launched offensives against the LTTE some political factions were acting against the government, he said.

Minister Seneviratne said the government put effective development programs into practice in the East in the wake of liberating the East. Around Rs. 1,200 million had been allocated to develop the East and the coal-power plant under construction in Trincomalee would be a boon. The Eastern province had been very fertile and the Nelaweli area of Trincomalee was a scenic area which had attracted tourists from four corners of the world.
