JERUSALEM (AP) - Israeli President Shimon Peres is calling on the world to do a better job controlling Iran than it did with Nazi Germany.
Peres says the world acted too late against Hitler, whose Nazis killed 6 million Jews. Peres said the world must shoulder its current responsibilities, because it is forbidden in history to be late.
Aides said this was a reference to Iran and its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Israel charges that Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons, and Ahmadinejad often calls for Israel's destruction.
Peres was addressing the opening ceremony of Israel's annual Holocaust memorial day on Wednesday evening.
He said if Hitler had succeeded in building nuclear weapons, the world could have been destroyed.
