Bogoda Seelawimala Thera appointed new Sanghanayake in Britain

KANDY - Ven. Bogoda Seelawimala Thera, Chief incumbent of London Buddhist Vihara, UK has been appointed the Chief Sanghanayake of Great Britain by the Malwatte Chapter of the Siyam Maha Nikaya (Siamese Sect).

The Sri Sannasa (Certificate of Appointment) was presented to Ven. Seelawimala Thera by the Anunayake (Deputy Chief) of the Malwatte Chapter Ven. Dr. Niyangoda Sri Vijthasiri Thera on Saturday (03) at attended meeting of the Maha Sangha and laity from Sri Lanka and the UK.

Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa represented the Central Province at the Ceremony at historic Uposhathagaraya of Malwatte Vihara, Kandy.

Ven. Vijithasiri Thero said that Ven. Bogoda Seelawimala Thero possessed efficiency, courage and the knowledge required to satisfy the aspirations of the western world particularly those in the UK.

The newly appointed Chief Sanghanayake Ven. Seelawimala Thera while expressing his gratitude to the Supreme Council of the Sangha headed by the Mahanayake Thera said that the appointment conferred on him would be used to serve the people in the UK and elsewhere in the west, desirous of learning Buddhism.

The prelate paid a tribute to the Anagarika Dharmapala Trust for the devoted service to the maintenance of London Buddhist Vihara and Mahopadya Aluthgama Dhammananda Nayake Thera of Malwatte for inspiring him to join the London Buddhist Vihara.

Governor Kobbekaduwa, Ven. Prof. Bellanwila Wimalaratna, Chancellor Sri Jayewardenepura University, Pallattara Sumanajothi, Sanghanayake, Southern Sri Lanka, Pahagama Somaratana Thero, Chief Incumbent Tames Buddhist Vihare, London, Prof. Thumbulle Seelakkanda, Galagama Sri Attadassi, Anunayake of Asgiriya Dr. Walgowwagoda, Sri Wimalabuddhi, Secretary Malwatte chapter and Lakdas Panagoda in London also spoke.

Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, Central Province Agriculture Minister Jayaratne Dissanayake, Kandy Mayor L. B. Aluwihare, Messrs. Sinha Ratnatunga, Peter Mock and Ms. Vivien Sunlight were present among others.
