The JVP yesterday complained that its candidates and members involved in the Eastern Provincial Council elections campaign were being increasingly targeted by the TMVP leader Pillaiyan’s goons.
Citing a most recent incident the JVP said a set of TMVP activists had set upon on a group of JVP supporters at Thirukovil on Monday evening. They had arrived in three wheelers and were armed. They had assaulted a JVP supporter R. Wijayasunderam and told him only Pillayan’s party can canvass support in Tamil areas in the East.
On Saturday, three JVP offices in the Trincomalee District were attacked and destroyed. Another JVP office situated between two Police posts in Morawewa was destroyed early on Thursday last week.
The party claimed that certain government officials were also discriminating against the JVP
"From the very inception of the polls campaign the JVP suffered most in the Ampara District. Death threats were issued to JVP supporters and material used for the campaign had been forcibly removed from party offices. In Ampara too the JVP was not allowed to campaign amongst the Muslim population."
The Batticaloa District JVP chief candidate, Mohamed Ibrahim’s office was destroyed by a gang of men who arrived in a vehicle belonging to the Road Development Authority, the JVP statement said.
