Ahern, Paisley herald new era of peace on Ahern's last day in office

DROGHEDA, Ireland (AP) - Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern and the Protestant leader of Northern Ireland, Ian Paisley, have heralded a new era of peace on Ahern's last day in office.

The two men came together Tuesday on a 1690 battlefield where divisions between Protestant and Catholic were drawn. They saluted the cooperation and peace that both men helped forge and opened a tourist center at the battle site.

Paisley is expected to step down within the next month as leader of the Democratic Unionist Party and as first minister of the Catholic-Protestant administration in Northern Ireland. Ahern is tendering his resignation later Tuesday in Dublin after 11 years in power in the Republic of Ireland.
