Those who call themselves Eminent Persons (IIGEP) in a public declaration lamented of "IIGEP’s apprehension regarding absence of political will" on the part of Sri Lanka.
Their public statement was thereafter shredded on multiple aspects by the statements issued by the Counsel for the Army and the STF, the Attorney General and in the hard talk delivered by the President at his formal meeting with the IIGEP.
Thereupon, these foreign purported eminent persons in IIGEP Chairman P. N. Bhagwati’s letter of 28.August 28 to the President tamely responded "...you will find that the IIGEP has not accused the Government of Sri Lanka of any lack of political will insofar as the functioning of the Commission of Inquiry(COI) is concerned." Before the whipping, IIGEP in their previous statement blamed Sri Lanka on an apprehension regarding lack of political will.
To distinguish IIGEP doublespeak will need the finest of fine combs.
Those who did not lavish praise previously now poured an overdose-"…so far as the Commission is concerned it has been doing very good work and the members of IIGEP have had the best of cooperation from the Chairman and Members of COI. I have no doubt that COI will continue to carry on its work with zeal and dedication as it has been doing so far," says the same Bhagwati and his team of IIGEP’s who packed their bags and left Sri Lanka in a huff the moment the public sittings commenced at the COI as their own infirmities were being exposed at the COI.
We said in our previous statement that the IIGEP were trying "to establish an intimidating environment so as to force and compel the Commissioners to reach a finding against the security forces and their superior officers and absolve the LTTE of any wrongdoing."
We note the movement from intimidation to supplication on the part of the IIGEP to achieve the same objective.
The sad state is notwithstanding all these events Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe still wants them back; not surprising since he and his colleagues from the UNP supported the CFA and are responsible for the advancement made by the LTTE.
Without attempting to pontificate or pander (both outside their mandate) why do the IIGEP not ensure that justice prevails?
