Lankan gets death sentence in Kuwait for heroin possession

A Sri Lankan national, working in Kuwait, was sentenced to death by hanging, by a Kuwaiti Court, for being in possession of 13.5 Kgs of heroin, reports from Kuwait said yesterday.

According to the current street value the haul of heroin was worth over ten million Sri Lankan rupees, Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment sources said.

They said they were trying to get all the details on the Sri Lankan National and had made an appeal against the death penalty, but all details on the case and his identity have not been received as yet.
The remains of Maheshwari Velayuthan, Advisor to the Minister of Social Services and Welfare Douglas Devananda, who was shot dead by the LTTE in Jaffna on Tuesday were placed in the EPDP office at Park Street yesterday (15) for the public to pay their respects.
