

Lankan students trapped in quake hit China
Twenty five Sri Lankan students are among those stranded by the earthquake in Sichuan Province of China, Sri Lankan Ambassador in China Karunatilaka Amunugama told The Island yesterday.
A Lankan medical student, Wasantha Mendis said that he with four other Lankan students escaped death by running out of the hostel when the buildings were falling apart.
They are short of drinking water and were currently residing in tents, he said over the phone adding that Lankan Embassy in Beijing was taking care of them.
Ambassador Karunatilake said that 20 others were among those displaced in Sichuan Province. They had not given their details to the Embassy before the calamity but the Embassy was taking action to trace them. All of them were out of danger, he said.
