'Whither EPC polls'– A reply to Kumar Rupesinghe

Kumar Rupesinghe, the apostle of peace and the guardian of human rights, calls Eastern PC polls, a circus for some, 'a joke played on the people', when the franchise, a basic human right is restored to the masses to elect their representatives, a right denied to them during last two decades of LTTE tyranny. We didn't hear even a murmur of protest from this rights activist when human rights were plundered and children conscribed for the LTTE 'army' under the jackboot of Prabhakaran. Evidently, he was happy and gay at the turn of events at that time.

In his article titled, 'whither the Election in the East', in The Island of 9 May, the writer expresses skepticism about the Army Commander's assurance that the Vanni could be liberated before the end of the year. His skills at gathering battle field information is rather intriguing. Perhaps he is enlightened by the 'Sun god' himself, who is said to be in possession of even chemical weapons to defend his Tiger domain.

'The people of the East have, in the last twenty years, only witnessed many marauding armies, who invaded their homes, raped their women and abducted their men'. Here too, he tries to dampen LTTE atrocities by blaming 'other armies' too, such as, those of other Tamil political parties, whose leaders and political activists were brutally gunned down by the LTTE to claim the title of 'the sole representative of the Tamil people', and the Sri Lankan Army entrusted with the task of safeguarding our motherland against LTTE's grand design to create a separate state. He does not perceive any difference between the LTTE – categorized as the most ruthless terrorist outfit in the world, by the FBI – and our armed forces.

'Current elections are being held in he wake of the so called liberation of the East from the LTTE', he mocks at the operation conducted by our armed forces to liberate the East, starting with the opening of Mavilaru Sluice gates, closed by the LTTE depriving about 30,000 civilians of drinking water and drying up of about 10,000 acres of paddy. How dare he call it a 'so called liberation', when the people of the area enjoy the fruits of freedom now, which would never have been a reality so long as the region remained in the clutches of the LTTE? This is how he attempts to deceive the international community and the NGOs that pay him liberally in millions of rupees to present a wrong picture of our country to the outside world.

Sometime back, he carried the coffin of a slain Tamil MP over his shoulders along city streets to pin the blame on the government though the crime had in fact been committed by the LTTE, which has killed many Tamil politicians. Relations of the deceased MP castigated him for leaving the coffin by the wayside, after achieving the objective of inciting a commotion. Such is the type of deception and intrigue of this so called peace lobbyist who would stoop to the lowest level in furtherance of his petty ends.
