Interesting moments in Caltex rugby League
It is an interesting stage in the Caltex Inter-Club League as defending champions Kandy SC from the hill capital are in the box seat with two wins under the belt. They defeated Old Zahirans Sports Club SC by 120 points to nil in their first match at Maitland Crescent and won their second match against Air Force by 34 points (two goals and four tries) to eight (one try and penalty) played at Rathmalana.
CR & FC are also shaping up well with two wins so far. They defeated Sri Lanka Air Force by 29 points (two goals and three unconverted tries) to 3 (one penalty) in the first match and went on to defeat Police SC by 29 points (two goals and three unconverted tries) to three (one penalty). Earlier Police created an upset by defeating CH & FC in a very close affair by 12 points to 11.
The match between CR & FC and Police seemed headed for an upset as Police led 16-5 at the end of the first half but they were stunned in the second as CR & FC came back fighting to make it 25 to 16 in their favour.
CH & FC meanwhile defeated the soldiers by 22 (two goals and try) to 17 (two goals, one try and penalty) after their loss to Police.
Havelocks SC are also sitting pretty. They posted a mammoth 91 points against the Old Zahirans (eight goals and seven tries) and also beat the soldiers by 21 (one goal, one unconverted try and penalty) to 15 (1goal, one unconverted try and a penalty).
Pressure is mounting on Army Sport Club as they are yet to record a win in the tournament after losing their first two matches. The soldiers were unlucky in their second match against CH & FC when they lost 22 to 17. Both teams played well and it was 17-all just before close but M. Jayasinghe of CH came up with a match-winning performance to score the last try of the match which gave his team a vital five-point win.
Meanwhile, the Old Zahirans have been at the receiving end and are yet to score single point in the tournament. They lost the first match to Kandy SC when Kandy destroyed them at Maitland Crescent and in the second match it was Havelocks who destroyed them at Havelock Park. The question that is in the air is whether the Old Zahirians have it in them to compete at this level.
