Small scale milk farmers cry for help

KANDY – Milk farmers of Yatinuwara claim that small scale milk producers may be forced to wind up their industry due to the heavy costs of medical treatment for their animals and monthly payments to milk collection centres.

They are expected to meet the cost of transport and other payments to obtain Veterinary Surgeons and other officers and a monthly fee is levied by the Milk Collection Centres.

The income earned by selling a litre of fresh milk at Rs. 27 or Rs. 28 does not cover the cost of production, they said.

The Pottapitiya Milk Producers Society states that it has made representations to the authorities but to no avail. The farmers seek the assistance of the authorities at least to provide medical treatment to their animals free or at an affordable cost.

The Society has made a written representation to President Mahinda Rajapaksa in this regard.
