Defending champions St. Peter’s College recorded the highest winning margin as they defeated Vidyartha College by 77 points to 3 in a one-sided Singer League inter-school rugby encounter at Nittawela yesterday.
The Peterites who were given a daunting start by their opponents led 17 points to three at the breather before dominating in the second half.
The lads from Bambalapitiya collected their points off seven goals, five tries and a solitary penalty while the home team could not muster anything beyond a penalty.
Vidayartha started off quite well and almost took control of the game raising many an eyebrows, but their penetration did not last more than 20 minutes and as a result they had to pay a heavy price in the end.
On the other hand, the Peterites who cut loose in the latter half went on to add as much as sixty points to their total. The agility and stamina factor that the Vidyarthians were faced with in the earlier games once more turned out to be their main set back. The Peterites, on the other hand, despite their heavy scoring can not be wholly be content with their efforts in the initial half in particular.
It was Vidayartha who drew first blood when their fly half fired across a 40 meter penalty but sadly for them this remained their one and only scoring as the visitors shot back immediately afterwards with a penalty executed by winger Harsha Weerakkody. They went on to increase the score with a try by their number eight Ishan Noor who had an excellent game and Weerakkdoy added the conversion points for the visitors to lead 10-3. Then came one of the spectacular tries of the game when their winger Jerald Canute ran over 65 meters before touching and Weerakkody did the honours for the Petes to lead 17 -3 at lemons.
Upon resumption, it tuned out to be one way traffic with St. Peter’s completely dominating the game.
