Sri Lanka’s 'Shilpa Sayura' the winner
The Stockholm Challenge Award 2008 has been awarded to the digital learning system ‘Shilpa Sayura’ (Sea of knowledge) Project presented by Sri Lanka under education category. A total of 145 outstanding ICT projects from countries all over the world under six categories were selected for the finals.

All finalists were invited to Stockholm and participated in the Challenge Week, held from May 19 – 22 in Kista, North of Stockholm City.  The Awards Ceremony took place in the evening on May 22, in the Blue Hall, venue of the Nobel Banquet. The winning projects in each category were announced and presented with the Challenge Trophy and a check of 5,000 Euros.

The "Shilpa Sayura" project presented by Mr.Neranjan Meegammana, Project Leader of the Shilpa Sayura of Sri Lanka received the Stockholm Challenge Award 2008 for education category.The Challenge programme 2008 is a project mooted to promote usage of information communication technology for Development projects globally.

"The standard of the projects in the Stockholm Challenge Award this year is better than ever", says Project Manager Ulla Skidén. She added, "the criteria for participation have been set to a higher level compared to earlier years. Participants needed to more clearly demonstrate social impacts and sustainability with their projects in 2008. This resulted in 145 exceptional projects from more than 50 countries."

The Stockholm Challenge is a biannual awards programme launched by the City of Stockholm since 1994. It is now owned by the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm and sponsored by the City Council of Stockholm, Ericsson and Sida.

Shilpa Sayura is the winner of i4D award at e India 2007 and Stockholm Challenge GKP Award at GK3 KUL, Malaysia in 2007. The system provides an interactive means of Digital Self Learning Programme based on national curriculum of Sri Lanka for students in the remote and rural areas who do not have adequate resources and teachers for their education. It is a Local Language Digital Learning System.  The aim of Shilpa Sayura is to improve self learning capacity of the handicapped students in remote areas and rural communities to prepare for the national examinations. Shilpa Sayura Project is a multi stake holder ICT community initiative with the e-Sri Lanka ICTA e-Society funding.

At the felicitation ceremony held at the Sri Lanka Embassy in Stockholm which was organized by the Sweden-Sri Lanka Business Council the business community based inStockholm commended the effort by Mr.Neranjan Meegammna. Ambassador Ranjith Jayasooriya hosted a reception at the residence to congratulate Mr.Neranjan Meegammna, Director of the Shilpa Sayura Project on his success in the Stockholm Challenge 2008.
