SLC bought whisky worth Rs. 1.7 m from cricket official

During Jayantha Dharmadasa’s tenure as cricket chief, Rs. 1.7 million was paid to one of his colleague’s’ who owned a wine store. ‘The Island’ on previous instances has exposed Dharmadasa’s abuse of power during his term as President of Sri Lanka Cricket and yesterday SLC admitted that over Rs. 1.7 million had been paid to Borella Wine Stores, from whom SLC purchased liquor for cricket board functions.

The owners of Borella Wine Stores, Priyantha and Samantha Algama worked with Dharmadasa in the Interim Committee in the capacity of Director, National Development Committee and Media Manager.

After Samantha Algama was sacked as Media Manager last month, a section of the print media went to town saying that Algama had been working in an honorary capacity. Yesterday, SLC produced bills and vouchers, which indicate that SLC’s liquor purchases were done at Borella Wine Stores.

While the latest revelation shows that the Algama brothers had conflicts of interest it was also revealed that a monthly allowance of Rs. 50,000 was paid to Samantha Algama as Entertainment and Fuel Allowance by Sri Lanka Cricket amounting up to Rs. 640,000 during the period he served the cricket board.
