PNM: reduce ministerial expenses

The Patriotic National Movement (PNM) on Tuesday urged the government to cut down on ministerial expenses and call a halt to corrupt practices. The government ministers are living in luxury at the expense of poor people. The troops are obtaining massive victories in the North. Because of that the people tolerate the situation, but the government’s sacrifice on CoL is nil.

Co Chairman of the PNM Dr. Wasantha Bandara said the PNM proposed the government to cut down the Ministers fuel ration by 50 per cent. The vehicles of ministers must be reduced by 50 per cent as an option to fuel price crisis. A sum of 50 per cent of Ministers salaries would be credited to an account for use of Military operations.

"The next six months are very crucial. With the military victories of the North the LTTE has planned to carry out massive attacks on civilians in south. We have been informed by our members in Norway that June 25, 26 and 27 will be very dangerous. But, the government doesn’t have proper awareness programme to organize people to be vigilant," Dr. Bandara said.

Chairman of the PNM Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekara said that Labour Minister Athauda Seneviratne went to Geneva to attend a meeting of International Labour Organisation with a 22 member delegation including his son. The government is also going to import Benz cars for Ministers. How, can they do this with the current fuel prices and sky rocketing cost of living.
