CEB engineers work to rule

The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers Union yesterday began a work-to-rule campaign following a special meeting to discuss the government’s stand on their demands.

They said they apologised for any inconvenience to the general public but had to fight for their rights without being deceived by the government any longer.

A senior engineer told The Island yesterday that they would work from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and not attend to any breakdowns. "We will only attend to technical problems that may pose a threat to national security," he added.

The Union said that despite their requests, Minister Seneviratne had failed to appoint a suitable Chairman to the CEB.

"We will give the government another week and thereafter we will definitely have to take tougher measures," an engineer said.

He also said within seven days, engineers from 14 organisations, would launch a protest campaign against the non issuance of duty free vehicle permits.
