Today is Poson Poya

Poson Full Moon Poya day commemorates the historical visit of Ven. Anubuddhu Mahinda Thero to this land.

Several religious ceremonies have been organised in sacred places islandwide, including the Atamasthana (eight sacred shrines) at the Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura and in Mihintale. The ceremonies include Dana, Seela Bhavana (meditation) programmes, religious sermons discussions, floral offerings and illuminations of Buddhist shrines.

The main Poson Day celebrations sponsored by the State to mark the visit of Ven. Mahinda Thero will be centered in the Attamasthana, the Sri Maha Bodhi and in Mihintale.

Security measures have been tightened and 8,000 police and security personnel deployed to ensure the security of thousands of pilgrims expected to converge on Anuradhapura.

All State and private institutions and the Poson festival organizing committees have taken measures to provide the devotees with all facilities and accomodation and to organize recitals of Bhakthi gee, pandals, dansalas, illuminations and lighting of oil lamps.

Special bus and train services from Colombo and the suburbs of Anuradhapura have also been arranged for the convenience of pilgrims.
