Janaka vows to take NCP

Major General Janaka Perera (retd) yesterday vowed to ensure a victory for the UNP at the forthcoming election to the North Central Province.

In a brief interview with The Island, Perera expressed confidence that he would be victorious at the election as in the battlefields of the Northern and Eastern Provinces during his stint with the army.

Perera, a one-time commanding officer of the elite 53 Division which played crucial role in major battles against the LTTE, said he was ready to take on the challenge and lead the UNP to victory.

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe on Friday night informed the Political Affairs Committee of his decision to appoint Perera as the chief ministerial candidate for the NCP and Upul Shantha Sannasgala as their leading man in the Sabaragamuwa Province.

Perera said he would receive the blessings of Jayasirimaha Bodhi before launching his campaign. He said he had always received the blessings of Jayasirimaha Bodhi before going on the offensive against the LTTE and this time, too, there would be no exception.
