An alert Civil Defence Force member on Saturday thwarted an LTTE attempt to blast a column of the railway bridge at Nawayalathenna on the Kandy-Matale line.

Army headquarters said an improvised explosives device weighing about 800 grams of plastic explosives had been detected and defused on Saturday afternoon.
