NTUC snubs Presidential invite
The JVP-led National Trade Union Centre has snubbed a presidential invitation to a meeting on Sunday to discuss the Government’s economic development plan. It said it would only attend the meeting if provided an opportunity to discuss the three main demands of the working class: a Rs. 5,000 salary increase to all workers, payment of the Cost of Living allowance without any reduction and an immediate reduction in train fares.

In response to President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s invitation, the President of the NTUC, Parliamentarian K. D. Lal Kantha wrote to the President saying:

"We are in receipt of your three letters addressed to myself, MP Wasantha Samarasinghe and comrade Koralaarachchi inviting us to discuss the Government’s economic development plan and problems faced by trade unions.

"Since we have addressed several letters to you to discuss the problems faced by the working class and have so far not received any response, we have decided to launch a one-day general strike on July 10.

Under these circumstances we cannot accept your invitation to meet you and instead request you to provide us with an opportunity to discuss the three demands we have put forward on behalf of the working class.
