*Treasury grants to be cut, Western Province to lead the way
PCs get govt. okay to boost revenue through higher taxes

The cash-strapped SLFP-led coalition government has directed Provincial Councils to add to their revenue through increase of business turnover tax as the Treasury intended to cut down on its contribution to run PCs.
The government has warned the PCs that they shouldn’t depend on the Treasury due to the present economic crisis fuelled by spiraling and defence costs. Authoritative sources said the Western Provincial Council (WPC) would lead the way with other PCs expected to follow.
But the Eastern PC run by the breakaway LTTE group - the TMVP would be the government’s baby as it didn’t have the capacity to raise its own funds.
