Hemas’ Southern Hospital Galle celebrates
25th anniversary
The Hemas-managed Southern Hospital Galle, one of the pioneering private hospitals in the Southern Province commemorated its 25th anniversary with a massive health camp at Haththaka Vidyathilaka Vidyalaya, Niyagama recently.

Nearly 1500 patients of different age groups from Niyagama and neighbouring villages obtained free treatment on this day. A total of fifteen doctors, three dental surgeons along with specialist consultants in the fields of neurology, paediatrics, haematology, psychiatry, general surgery and gynaecology & obstetrics voluntarily contributed towards the success of event. In addition to medical consultations, the camp also included a pharmacy, a diagnostic laboratory, a dental clinic, and a surgical clinic. The public lecture given by eminent consultant psychiatrist Dr. D V J Harishchandra on "The importance of cleansing one’s mind on a regular basis" was a major attraction at this camp.

"Populated by under-privileged hardworking farmer communities, the people of the Niyagama area undergo many hardships to obtain medical treatment. Many are deprived of specialist treatment, as they are left with no option but to travel all the way to Galle, more than 40 kilometers away. This health camp was a boon to them in every sense", Dr. Sajeewa Narangoda, COO of Southern Hospital said.

Principal of Vidyathilaka Vidyalaya, the Ven. Mahinda Thero, said "Many organisations have organized health camps here in the past. This was however the first health camp where the poor villagers could consult specialist doctors, and free of charge."

"As a responsible corporate citizen in the health care industry, we feel that everybody has a right to quality healthcare. We are indeed very happy to work with a team of specialist consultants, doctors and other staff who are strongly committed towards healthcare as a part of their social responsibility." said Murtaza Esufally, Chairman of the Southern Hospital.

The Southern Hospital in Galle has been providing medical services to the people of the Southern Province since its launch in 1983 as a small scale healthcare provider. Rejuvenated after its acquisition by Hemas Hospitals in 2007, the hospital is currently undergoing a major expansion programme. This includes the construction of a new three storied building complex, adjacent to the existing hospital, with 40 beds, 15 consultation chambers, two operating theatres, an endoscopy unit, an ICU, a modern radiology unit and a pharmacy. The hospital currently caters to more than 500 patients a day.
