Priyankara Jayaratne new Deputy Speaker

Puttalam District member of Parliament Priyankara Jayaratne was elected Deputy Speaker in Parliament yesterday unanimously as the Opposition did not propose a nominee for Deputy Speaker.

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake proposed Jayaratne’s name and it was seconded by the Leader of the House Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.

Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara said he wished to thank all the members of the House for upholding democratic traditions in making a unanimous decision to appoint a Deputy Speaker.

Priyankara Jayaratne who was nominated by the Government to fill the vacancy in Parliament created by the assassination of Puttalam District member D. M. Dassanayaka is the son of a former Deputy Minister in the SLFP Government 1970-77 S. D. R. Jayaratne.
