Troops capture LTTE stronghold

Seven LTTE cadres were killed and 23 injured in confrontations on Monday night with troops on the Welioya front. One soldier was killed and two injured, Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

Troops captured an LTTE stronghold North of Janakapura in the vicinity of the ‘Michael Base’ which was captured by the army on Friday noon, he said.

In a subsequent search operation soldiers recovered 46 anti personnel mines and seven improvised explosive devices.

In clashes in the Jaffna front in the areas of Kilali, Nagarkovil and Eluththumaduval three soldiers were

injured due to anti personnel mines.

One soldier was killed and two were injured as a result of mortar fire from the Tigers.

In confrontations in Mannar one LTTE cadre was killed and a solider was injured. Twenty two AP Mines were recovered by the troops.

Eleven Tiger cadres were killed and 17 were injured when the troops engaged the LTTE at Navvi, Palampidi in Vavuniya.

Troops recovered 23 APM’s and a T-56 assault rifle Nanayakkara said.
