Vidanage for Beijing Olympics

Sri Lanka’s Beijing Olympic participation was further boosted with Commonwealth Games Gold medalist Chintana Vidanage receiving a wildcard entry to represent the country in weightlifting at the Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee accepted Vidanage’s name with just a few days left for cutoff date for registrations.

"Chinthana Vidanage will take part at the Olympics as a wildcard entrant. The International Olympic Committee has accepted his name on his past performances," Hemasiri Fernando, the Chairman of the National Olympic Committee told ‘The Island’ yesterday.

Vidanage was among ten nominees, whose names the NOC had forwarded to the INOC to consider for wildcard entries.

"We forwarded ten names and the INOC has accepted Vidanage as a worthy candidate," Fernando said.

The Polonnaruwa born lifter rose to fame when he won Sri Lanka’s first ever Gold medal in weightlifting at Commonwealth Games in Australia, in 2006.

Vidanage won the Gold medal in the men’s 62 kg category. With NOC confirming Vidanage’s participation, Sri Lanka’s participation at Olympics has now risen to eight.
