Production of tea has registered a 29 per cent increase during the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, according to the Department of Census and Statistics. This has mainly contributed to the 6 per cent of overall increase registered in the agricultural sector in the first quarter of the current year, the Department said.
A total of 82.6 million kg of tea was produced during the first quarter of this year compared to 63.8 kg during the same period last year which is a 29.6 per cent increase.
The reduction of production during the first quarter of last year was attributed to workers resorting to trade union action and unsatisfactory weather patterns that were no conducive to the production of tea. However, efficient maintenance of tea estates, higher prices fetched for manufactured tea and prevalent conducive weather conditions had immensely contributed to the increase of production this year, it was revealed.
