LTTE ambition not only Eelam, but control of entire island
Army Commander

KANDY - The ambition of the LTTE is not just Eelam, but control over the entire island. LTTE terrorism must therefore be crushed in toto, asserted Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka who called on the Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Mahanayake Thero of Asgiriya yesterday.

The LTTE's objective is to crush the Sinhala race and take the entire country under its control. Some foreign sectors support their objective. It is time for those of the South to realise this position, the Sri Lanka Army Chief told the Mahanayake Thero.

The LTTE is a murderous organisation. Those in the South should understand the brutality and aspirations of the LTTE, he said.

The Army Commander earlier told the Ven. Mahanayake of Malwatte Tibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Thero, that the security forces had efficiently defeated the LTTE in the North.

He said the ultimate aim was to relieve the North from the control of the LTTE and restore a peaceful environment to rebuilding democratic administration as in the East.

The security forces have been successful to a large extent in the North and a major part of the terrorist held area has come under the control of the Army, he said.

The Ven. Tibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thero said the security forces had proved successful in their targets in the North as President Rajapaksa had given right directions and encouragement to the security forces.

The security forces in their success in the North have been capable of building a confidence in the people, the prelate said.

The Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Mahanayake Thero of Asgiriya said that the Sangha could not advice the destroying of lives, but it was the duty and responsibility of a government in power to save the lives of people and properties.

A government must use power and direct the security forces to crush destructive elements harmful to the people and the country, the Mahanayake Thero stressed.

The prelate said, it is very unsatisfactory that some so called leaders of our country are not cooperating with regard to the war against terrorism. There must be peace in the country. Leaders of all groups should agree at least to resolve the major issue and restore peace in the country.

The political party system is not suitable for this country. The country requires some dictatorship until at least the country is developed.

The Army Commander was accompanied by Mrs. Fonseka and children.

Present on the occasion was the Central Governmental Brigadier Udayantha Wijeratne.

With the prelate of Asgiriya were Ven. Dr. Godagama Mangala Thero, head of the Palipana Sri Chandananda Vidyalaya and Ven. Anamaduwe Dhammadassi Thero, Secretary General Asgiriya chapter.
