Release NBC probe report - GMOA

The Government Medical Officers Association has urged the Ministry of Health to release the report on the investigations into the alleged use of outdated blood platelet bags so that relevant medical staff could take immediate steps in the event that the findings are adverse.

Dr. Upul Gunasekara, GMOA Assistant Secretary, yesterday claimed that the allegations were false. "This has caused great inconvenience and hindrance to the meritorious endeavours of blood donors who are wondering whether their donations were in vain in the event the allegations were proved right."

Making light of the claim that there was a conspiracy to privatise the blood platelet service he said it was a ploy by the JVP affiliated medical trade unions to disrupt the good services provided by the efficient medical teams of the National Blood Bank and at other blood banks.

He urged the Health Ministry to complete its investigations and publish the findings as soon as possible so that donors and the medical services of the blood bank and the NBC could continue without any ambiguity.

The All Ceylon Medical Officers Association (ACMOA) claimed that some sections of the Public Health Sector were conspiring to privatise the blood platelet service by giving the impression through media that blood platelet bags which have exceeded their expiry date were being used in blood transfusions. They said that the National Blood Transfusion Bill drafted by the Ministry of Health proved that there was a conspiracy to privatise the National Blood Bank by creating a crisis.
