Some species of anaconda, now in the public gaze, are endemic to Sri Lanka.

I remember my grandfather, a wildlife lover, used to say that the word ‘anaconda’ is derived from Sinhala meaning that the snake has a penchant for attacking the spine ‘conda anna’.

I do not know whether he did so in jest to amuse us little children. But I grew up in that belief whenever the word is aired.
