Australia and Myanmar have sought observer status in SAARC, Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said yesterday.
He told a news conference at the BMICH that new applications indicate the growing profile of SAARC in other parts of the world.
"The European Union, USA, Japan,China, South Korea and Mauritius already have observer status. New applications give greater credence to SAARC’s existence."
Bogollagama said that Afghanistan, the newest SAARC member will become a signatory to SAFTA during the 15th SAARC Summit to be held in Colombo from July 27 to August 3, 2008.
