Army bags big base, recovers 120 mm mortar
The army in a daring operation on the Vavuniya front yesterday seized one 120mm field gun, two 81 mm mortars, forty-eight 120 mm rounds, seventy-four 81 mm rounds, four communication sets, two motor cycles, five T 56 assault weapons, one binocular and one tractor.

Army Chief Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka told The Island his troops had recovered seven bodies of LTTE cadres. The 57 Division and the elite Special Forces had carried out the operation about three kilometres south of Mallawi town, he said.

The recovery of mortars was the first since the army launched ground operations in the Vanni over a year go, he said. With the fall of the artillery/mortar base, the LTTE held positions on the Thunnukai-Mallawi stretch had come under heavy military pressure, the army chief said. (SF)
