This family sleeping (an infant almost hidden between its parents) peacefully in their ‘bedroom’ opposite the Savoy cinema begs one to think of life’s many problems. Some would say that they are the masters of their own destiny and hence could get out of their situation should they really want to. Others would say that society pushed them to where they are. It is probably a mixture of both. Perhaps this family reflects the situation our own country is in. Whatever the case may be it is fact that the development through the millennia has not eradicated poverty in the world. Poverty still exists, and grows despite developments in medicine, information technology and economies. For as long as the ‘me first’ economies continue many will have to do with what blessings only peaceful sleep can bring; even if it is on the pavements that the homeless destitute have to lay their bodies down to sleep and pray to God their souls to keep.
