Evidence of an ancient iron smelting centre has been found at Serudandapola, during excavation for an electricity generation plant. However, though some signs of an ancient site had been found, no archaeological study had been made. Iron ore and crucibles in which iron may have been smelted were found in the area by the workers.

The area holds a number of sites scattered across with evidence of ancient workshops belonging probably to the Sigiriya period.
