Nearly 1,200 held under Emergency Regulations
Magistrate will visit Welikada - ASG

The Additional Solicitor General Palitha Fernando, PC, yesterday told the Supreme Court that the persons arrested under the Emergency regulation in the recent past, will be produced before the Magistrate. The Court will decide whether they are to be remanded or released.

Nearly 1,200 persons, arrested under Emergency Regulation are held in custody at Welikada. A Magistrate will visit Welikada and conduct inquiries.

The Ceylon Workers Congress had complained of the arbitrary arrest and detention of Tamils, during the recent past.

The Bench comprised the Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva, Justice Shirani Tilakawardena and Justice K. Sri Pavan.
