The sensation Sri Lanka Army created in the domestic cricket tournament last season was such that everyone was looking forward to their promotion to Tier ‘’ in the Premier Cricket tournament to see how they go about things against stronger opponents.
But it may not happen after all.
Badureliya Cricket Club, the team that will be relegated to Tier ‘B’ after ending up last in the Tier ‘A’ last season, are fighting tooth and nail to remain in the top tier and hence keep Army in the lower division.
According to the rules of the domestic tournament, the team that finished on top of Tier ‘B’ will progress to Tier ‘A’ while the team that ended last on Tier ‘A’ will be relegated to Tier ‘B’.
But now, Badureliya is putting pressure through the Sports Ministry to play a relegation match between the two clubs to find out who will qualify. Cricket sources said that this was against the rules of the domestic tournament, but if the ministry intervenes, like in all recent happenings, they will be left helpless.
What’s more disturbing is that the call to play the relegation match comes at a time when Army’s star player Ajantha Mendis is doing National duty.
Mendis and leg-spinner Seekkuge Prasanna played a pivotal role in Army’s emergence in Tier ‘B’. After Mendis’ scintillating performance during the Asia Cup tournament, he was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant. Sensing prominent Colombo clubs could lure the talented spinner, Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka gently cautioned Mendis to continue playing domestic cricket for the Army.
